CREATING FOR LIFE

The main criteria for selecting modern fire extinguishers

Preventing fires and, consequently, saving lives and avoiding significant damage is a crucial task worldwide. Powder fire extinguishers are the most accessible and widely used means of suppressing fires at an early stage.

Global experience indicates that approximately half of all fires are extinguished using fire extinguishers. This means the prevented damage far outweighs any cost savings on the quality of fire extinguishers. It is expected that our insurance companies will soon recognize this concept, aligning with international practices. Hence, a fire extinguisher should be considered a specific form of fire insurance, as accepted globally.

Why is the quality of a fire extinguisher important to the consumer? It's a common belief that a fire extinguisher is needed only to pass a fire inspection, and it's sufficient for this "item" to simply have a certificate.

It is widely known that there is a market for fire extinguishers "for fire inspectors," meaning those that are not intended for actual use. This market is still significantly larger than the market for quality fire extinguishers, primarily due to the lack of accessible information about cases where fire extinguishers failed during use. Additionally, consumers are rarely concerned with the simple calculation of their own expenses for maintaining (recharging and overhauling) fire extinguishers over their entire service life, which is at least 10 years.

Current legislation places full responsibility on building owners for damage caused by fire to the health and property of third parties. This aspect, along with global experience and common sense, compels consumers to choose high-quality and reliable fire extinguishers for equipping their facilities.

The current regulation in the Russian Federation (Fire Safety Regulations) identifies the fire extinguisher rating as the sole criterion for selecting an extinguisher for premises of a corresponding category. Not "liters" and "kilograms," but specifically the rating (fire extinguishing efficiency). All MIG and MIG E fire extinguishers have ratings higher than standard extinguishers. For instance, the MIG powder extinguisher with a 2 kg charge outperforms similar extinguishers from other manufacturers threefold in terms of fire extinguishing capability. This superiority is achieved through:
  • Using nitrogen purified from water vapor instead of the commonly used air, which prevents the introduction of combustible oxygen into the dispersion zone.
  • Utilizing high-quality powder, and for MIG extinguishers with 1, 2, 6, and 12 kg charges, as well as all MIG E extinguishers, certified in the European Union according to the most authoritative standard EN 615.
  • Employing larger volume cylinders.
In addition to superior fire extinguishing efficiency, all MIG and MIG E fire extinguishers possess other vital operational features:
  • Mechanical marking of certified cylinders for all MIG and MIG E models, ensuring quality and safety. All cylinders for MIG and MIG E are manufactured by POZHTECHNIKA in strict accordance with TR TS 032/2013 from specially reinforced steel.
  • A holder to secure the nozzle on the cylinder.
  • Durable, frost-resistant, reinforced rubber-textile hose used as the material for nozzles.
  • Mobile models are equipped with a shut-off nozzle, a removable trolley, and a protective spring frame at the connection point of the nozzle to the locking device.
The service life of all MIG and MIG E fire extinguishers is 15 years, which is 1.5 times longer than the period stipulated by GOST for regular fire extinguishers. Additionally, the warranty period is 4 years, which is twice that of standard fire extinguishers.

Since consumers are obligated to protect premises with fire extinguishers that meet a specified minimum rating, it is entirely reasonable for them to share this responsibility with fire extinguisher manufacturers by specifying the required rating directly in the contract. Ideally, the rating should be included in the name of the purchased fire extinguisher. Importantly, the current GOST standard allows for such notation directly in the fire extinguisher's name.

In the certificates of conformity for MIG and MIG E fire extinguishers, the ratings for classes A and B are indicated directly in the name of each model. For example, OP-2 ABCE MIG (2A, 55B). Specifying the fire extinguisher rating in the name, as a crucial quality indicator, fully aligns with consumer interests and is a necessary condition for selecting a quality fire extinguisher. Another important criterion for such a selection is the brand recognition and reputation of the manufacturer.

So, finally, several obvious criteria for a quality fire extinguisher that "won't let you down":
  1. Maximum rating for fire classes A and B (combustion of solids and liquids).
  2. Presence of structural elements that ensure safety and ease of use.
  3. Extended service life and warranty.
